Things to do
...In this area of outstanding natural beauty on the Dorset Heritage Coast.
lyme regis
Visit Town Beach to go swimming or fossil hunting (as did Mary Anning on Church Cliff towards Charmouth), take a boat trip fishing or head just around the bay to see the full impact of the layers of
yesteryear in the cliffs. There is Lyme Regis Museum, Dinosaurland and the Town Mill as well as many unusual and different shops though we still have a Coop, Tesco Express, Boots and Post Office. We also have our share of wonderful pubs, restaurants and coffee shops, all the afore mentioned are waiting to greet you in Lyme Regis. |
Lyme Regis is very community orientated and has a selection of festivals. These include the Fossil Festival, Arts Festival, Lifeboat Week (usually last week of July), Regatta and Carnival Week (usually the first full week in August) as well as a jazz weekend.
around lyme regis
Visit the bustling street market in Bridport on Wednesday and Saturdays. Wander along Lyme’s new seafront (walk now open from Charmouth Road to the Harbour), along Cobb wall (play the French Lieutenants Women), before heading to Monmouth Beach to look for fossils like Mary Anning. Seek Lyme Regis Cultural Heritage, Mary Anning, Jane Austen or John Fowles.
Visit the neighbouring village of Charmouth for more fossils, bus over and walk back. Take a fossil walk from the Heritage Centre at Charmouth or Lyme Regis Museum. Try one of the local walks out to Uplyme by the river then onto the Viaduct at Cannington and then back to Ware Lane about two and a half miles.
Visit Forde Abbey, the quarry caves at Beer, Pecorama Model Railways and Gardens or take a slightly longer trip to visit the picturesque village of Abbotsbury along the Jurassic coast where the views of Chesil bank are stunning. Here visit the Swannery and the Abbotsbury gardens. Take a ride on the Seaton Tramway along the Axe Estuary and lookout for the bird life as you go. Make a day trip to Weymouth on the Jurassic Coast X53 Bus and take in the views, many of which are unforgettable. Make a stop to see the Old Crown Court at Dorchester (the trial of the Tollpuddle Martyrs).
For something different check out what is on at the Marine Theatre .
Worn out now? Wander Lyme’s seafront area and just wile away time, you are on holiday after all!
